1) The common and scientific name of the disease.

The common name for it is Hong Kong Flu, and it's scientific name is H3N2 Influenza A

2) What causes it?

This disease is caused by the virus influenza A from the strain H3N2. It is transfered just about the same as other flus, through mucus, saliva, and some other body fluid. Since it can be transfered so easily, people with symptoms of the flu should have see the doctor right away and so they would not affect other people. In the flu pandemic, it was because people did not went see the doctor when they have the symptoms and affected many other people and many people died because of this.

3) What are the symptoms? How long do they it last? Is it deadly?

It's symptoms is similar to the other flu's, including:

  • Fever
  • Cough

These symptoms usually last 4 to 5 days, because at that time, some people might have already died, since 65 percent of the people got this flu died because of this flu. This flu involves in the 1968 - 1969 flu pandemic in Hong Kong and the world. Approximately 33,800 people died during the pandemic.

4) Can it be cured? If so, how? If not, is there any way that we can at least treat it?

This flu can be cured, it can be cured by taking medicines like those we do today for some other flus (including H5N1, H1N1). We would treat it by giving the patient to take pills such as Tamiflu. Although this flu is not as common as it was in the 1900 but it is still very dangerous. Back then, there are not very good and effective treatment in the flu pandemic and so many people at that time died because the had this flu.
